After the Thrill is Gone

“I don’t like men who give in too easily,” said this friend I was having coffee with. She’s currently in town and that was her response to my query about one of her many suitors.  “I prefer to be the hunter,” she said. “Ah, the thrill of the chase and all that,” I said. She laughed.

In a strange sort of way, I thought I knew what she was talking about.

I cook a lot now. The odd thing is that, but for the few pasta dishes I make, I sense a strange reluctance to cook the same dish twice! Of course, I still make the boring stuff I’ve made for years but, among the dozens of new dishes and combinations I’ve tried in the last year and half, there’re no more than three or four (maybe five...or six) that I’ve made a second or third time. I find this really strange because, touch wood, I’ve never had a real disaster in the kitchen and most of the dishes I’ve made have turned out alright if not good-ish. So, it’s really hard to understand why I don’t make those dishes on a more regular basis.

As with my friend, then, is it just the thrill of the chase?
